LUMIstar Omega - Flexible Luminometer for Measuring
Flash and Glow Luminescence

The LUMIstar Omega is a compact and modular microplate
luminescence reader that is designed for the widest
possible range of applications based on luminescence
labels.

Key Features
BMG LABTECH’s Digital Photon Integration (DPI)
technology and its programmable gain control give the
LUMIstar Omega great sensitivity, with an extended
linear dynamic range. By incorporating on-board reagent
injectors, flash kinetic reactions can be measured in as
little as 20 ms. The fast transport system allows
96-well plates to be read in as little as 20 seconds.
The LUMIstar Omega offers the most flexible hardware and
software features for all your applications!

Upgrades
The LUMIstar is upgradeable to both the FLUOstar and
POLARstar Omega. These upgrades have full spectrum
absorbance and either three or four detection modes,
respectively
Whenever the need for fluorescence and absorbance based
experiments arrive, have the LUMIstar Omega upgraded to
a FLUOstar Omega. If the need arises for simultaneous
dual emission or fluorescence polarization, have the
LUMIstar Omega upgraded to the POLARstar Omega. Both of
these new Omega multifunctional microplate readers are
capable of capturing a full absorbance spectrum (220-850
nm) in less than 1 second per well, at a resolution of 1
nm.

Built-in filter wheel
Some new luminescence assays need to measure at distinct
wavelengths, the filter wheel allows for this
possibility.
.............................................................................................................................................................................................
Incubation
Stable and uniform incubation is achieved by
temperature-regulated heating plates above and below the
entire microplate movement area. The top incubation
plate is at a slightly higher temperature than the
bottom plate to help reduce condensation when lids or
sealers are used. Incubation up to 60°C is available for
users with elevated temperature needs.

On-board reagent injectors
The LUMIstar Omega can be equipped with one or two
integrated syringe injectors (no bulky add-on boxes
beside or on top of the microplate reader). The
injectors can deliver agonists, substrates, enzymes -
even cells, for advanced microplate assays. Injection
speed and timing is fully adjustable within the control
software. Up to four different volumes, between 5 to 350
µL in 0.5 µL increments, can be delivered to each well;
thereby allowing the user to produce dilution schemes,
concentration ranges, etc.

Endpoint, slow and fast kinetic measurements
For flash reactions, you can select well-mode for fast
injections with interval times as short as 20 ms. For
glow reactions, you can choose plate-mode and have
longer kinetic times or you can choose endpoint test
runs. No matter your assay, it can be defined with up to
250 kinetic points at specified time intervals down to
the millisecond range.

Top
and bottom reading
Through a simple optical change, it is possible to
switch from top to bottom optics. Cell-based assays are
closer to the bottom optics, therefore allowing more
sensitive measurements. It is also possible to inject
into a 384-well plate and it is quickly determined if
top or bottom reading returns the best data.

Automatic gain adjustment
The automatic gain calculation provides the optimum
dynamic range for each assay.

Stacker and robot compatibility
BMG LABTECH’s standardized reader footprint and robotic
software interface make it easy to integrate the
LUMIstar Omega into all existing robotic systems. The
Stacker II with a 50 plate capacity and optional barcode
reader, is the modular attachment that can be integrated
with the LUMIstar Omega for medium throughput plate
handling.

Software
BMG LABTECH’s Omega Windows™ based software has an easy
to use control and a complete new powerful data
evaluation package. It is compatible with the new
Windows Vista™ operating system and is fully compliant
with FDA regulation 21 CFR Part 11.
The control software allows flexible definition of
microplate layouts, filter selection, interval and
injection times, as well as measurement frequency,
heating, and shaking parameters. During measurement, it
is possible to observe the data with the Real Time well
display feature, which allows viewing of raw values,
ratios, kinetic curves, or even color coded pictorials.
The new proprietary developed evaluation software allows
displaying and analyzing endpoint and kinetic data using
comprehensive data reduction algorithms and various
curve fitting options. Up to 384 kinetic curves can be
view individually or overlaid. For further data
processing results can be easily exported to Microsoft
Excel™.
